Uma ótima notícia estava à espera da equipe do Projeto Ouro sem Mercúrio nos garimpos da Região do Tapajós, no Pará: o uso de equipamentos de proteção individual (EPIs) parece ser uma prática bem disseminada entre os mineradores locais.
O Coordenador de Atividades de Campo do Projeto, Carlos Henrique Xavier Araujo, relata que em dois garimpos visitados em Morais de Almeida e Novo Progresso todos os garimpeiros estavam usando EPIs, uma realidade ainda incomum de ser presenciada na atividade.
Equipe dialoga com garimpeiros para entender mais sobre suas realidades.
“Estamos observando a implementação de boas práticas de segurança no garimpo por intermédio das cooperativas locais, o que demonstra que essas organizações têm desempenhado um papel importante na capacitação dos trabalhadores, possibilitando melhores condições de trabalho e por consequência mais qualidade de vida”, destacou Araujo.
De acordo com o presidente da COOPERTRANS, Pedro Mello Junior, a cooperativa tem desempenhado um papel fundamental na consolidação dessa nova cultura de segurança e se empenha em garantir que ela seja mantida e implementada em todas as áreas. Mello conta com orgulho ter vivenciado a adoção dos EPIs nos garimpos e destaca que a chave para o sucesso a principal mudança foi transmitir aos cooperados a importância dos EPIs, esclarecendo que é um a exigência da legal e uma etapa necessária para a conformidade legal dos garimpos, mas principalmente conscientizando os mineradores em relação à sua importância para a segurança pessoal e dos colegas.
“Durante nossas palestras, enfatizamos constantemente a importância da segurança. Antes, tínhamos casos de garimpeiros feridos, como pés cortados, quedas de galhos na cabeça e acidentes com máquinas que não viam os trabalhadores. No entanto, desde a implementação dos EPIs, esses acidentes praticamente desapareceram”, relata Mello.
A cooperativa afirma ter assumido um compromisso diário com a segurança. “Não é algo que colocamos lá e esquecemos. Realizamos inspeções regulares e visitas não anunciadas para identificar e solucionar qualquer situação que não esteja de acordo com as normas da cooperativa e garantir que tudo seja resolvido da melhor maneira possível”, complementa.
Pesquisa de campo visitará cinco localidades no estado
Desde o dia 20 de junho e até 1º de julho o projeto Ouro Sem Mercúrio realiza pesquisas de campo para conhecer a realidade do garimpo no sudoeste do Estado do Pará e avaliar as medidas necessárias para facilitar a redução ou eliminação do mercúrio na extração de ouro. Os trabalhos envolvem as localidades de Itaituba, Morais de Almeida, Jardim do Ouro, Novo Progresso e Creporizão.
Na terça-feira, 20 de junho, os pesquisadores realizaram reunião com o presidente da Federação das Cooperativas dos Garimpeiros do Pará (FECOGAP), Amaro Rosa, para apresentar o projeto e seus objetivos.
A primeira parte das atividades conta com o apoio da FECOGAP, COOPERTRANS e a Cooperativa Mista de Desenvolvimento do Creporizão (COOMIDEC) que viabilizou a realização das entrevistas com os trabalhadores do garimpo e experimentos técnicos nas frente de lavras.
As atividades de campo contam ainda com o apoio do Instituto Mineral para o Desenvolvimento do Tapajós (IDMTap), organização não-governamental criada em 2022 com o objetivo de incentivar a implementação de boas práticas no garimpo e no desenvolvimento sustentável na província mineral do Tapajós. A instituição está apoiando na organização logística e de alinhamento com lideranças de cooperativas e de conscientização dos garimpeiros locais para as visitas nos garimpos.

“O estabelecimento dessas parcerias com as cooperativas, comunidades garimpeiras locais e sociedade civil organizada, é muito importante para o sucesso do projeto porque permite um diálogo mais amplo e franco como o garimpo, mas, principalmente, estabelece canais de diálogo que deverão ser fortalecidos ao longo de todo o processo de implementação do futuro plano de ação nacional”, destaca o Coordenador de Relações Institucionais do projeto, Hassan Sohn. “É realmente motivador perceber esse grande movimento de responsabilidade socioambiental das lideranças garimpeiras locais”, completa.
A metodologia de campo do projeto segue sendo aplicada, com entrevistas com garimpeiros e garimpeiras, visando avaliar o quadro socioeconômico das comunidades garimpeiras e demais instituições e comunidades envolvidas no setor na região para entender o contexto de gestão ambiental, de saúde pública e ocupacional. Além disso, também será realizado o balanço geometalúrgico (de massa e de mercúrio), a fim de embasar as análises do estudo científico para elaboração do Plano de Ação no Brasil.
Do dia 26 ao dia 2º de julho serão visitadas cinco áreas de garimpo de aluvião e em leito de rio em Creporizão. As atividades nesta etapa serão concluídas com a realização da oficina “O Futuro do Garimpo”.
