Até o final de 2021 a empresa North Star Refino S.A. planeja colocar em operação a primeira unidade de refino de ouro na região norte do Brasil, localizada em Belém (PA), cuja construção foi iniciada em janeiro deste ano. A fábrica, que demandará um investimento de US$ 10 milhões, terá capacidade para refinar 2 toneladas/mês ou 24 toneladas/ano do metal, mas o plano já contempla uma expansão para 48 toneladas/ano, quando a empresa poderá atender também a clientes de outros países da América do Sul.
De acordo com o presidente da North Star, Maurício Gaioti, a história da empresa começa dentro da Omex, que é uma trading company de minérios e que “anda por todo o Brasil conversando com diversas mineradoras, mais especificamente dentro do segmento de metais preciosos, que é o seu carro-chefe”. Os dirigentes da empresa identificaram que o Pará tem todo um potencial para estar na liderança da produção mineral brasileira e o governo estadual tem interesse em promover a verticalização da produção mineral e trazer mais tecnologia para dentro do estado. Além disso, existe uma dificuldade logística para os produtores de ouro no Norte do País, que precisam realizar todo um trâmite para realizar o beneficiamento do minério em São Paulo e dali realizar exportações. “Por isto enxergamos a oportunidade de ter uma fábrica de ponta no Norte do Brasil”, afirma Gaioti.
Como havia necessidade de trazer tecnologia de ponta, diz ele, a empresa decidiu buscar expertise internacional. “Tínhamos que juntar forças com empresas internacionais para que pudéssemos construir algo que coloque esta fábrica como algo de ponta e transforme Belém num hub de metais preciosos. E a Omex, por já estar exportando há muito tempo, tinha vários contatos internacionais, especialmente um na Bélgica e outro em Dubai, buscamos a formação de uma joint venture para construir a fábrica do Brasil”.
O próximo passo, após a formação da joint-venture foi a compra de um terreno próximo ao aeroporto, por uma questão de logística e segurança. Em janeiro foi dado início à construção e em dezembro de 2021 deve ocorrer a inauguração, já com maquinário pronto e equipe treinada. O objetivo inicial é processar cerca de 25% do ouro produzido no País, evoluindo depois para a capacidade de 48 toneladas/ano, para atender também outros países.
Um ponto forte da nova unidade de refino, segundo Gaioti, é que, por contar com parcerias internacionais, o ouro por ela refinado terá o certificado de “Good Delivery”, podendo ser comercializado em qualquer lugar do mundo. A empresa também contará com um “Selo Amarelo”, uma espécie de certificado de origem o qual assegura que o ouro por ela processado foi extraído de forma totalmente legal e cumprindo todas as regras de compliance em termos ambientais, sociais e de governança. Durante a fase de construção serão gerados 120 empregos diretos e quando a unidade estiver operando deve empregar pelo menos 50 pessoas.
